THE RENOVATION

When we bought the ship, the layout was exactly the other way around. The entrance was via a spiral staircase to the lounge in the front part of the ship. Behind it was an enclosed kitchen and showers and toilets. Behind the bulkhead were the cabins with 32 berths, all bunk beds. Our immediate idea was to change this layout, so that a larger lounge area would be created. Reduction in the number of berths resulted in more luxurious cabins.

In 2017, the ship was put on the yard and we were able to tackle the hull well. Here and there, this had to be reinforced and also frames and the foundation of the masts were replaced. We were able to rebuild from this good foundation. The hold was sprayed under high pressure and then preserved. Then the floor was placed in it, a 4 cm thick azobé floor. Unfortunately, this would cause problems later, but we did not know that at the time.

On a sunny Sunday in 2018, the old lounge area was demolished with the help of friends. Now the ship was completely stripped of its old layout. Trusses were also replaced in this front hold and then sprayed and preserved. Old materials were purchased for the desired appearance of the ship. Even a piano should not be missing!

The hull and gangways were sandblasted and repainted. In a week we had a completely different ship. What a difference it makes!

In the meantime, it appeared that the azobé floor did not meet our requirements. The tropical hard wood was twisting. We decided to take this floor out and put something new in it. A difficult choice, because the floor had to have the appearance of real wood, it had to be able to take a beating and at the same time also be able to withstand the temperature changes. We think that we have found the right floor with the choice of oak glued to plywood.

To make a long story short, look at the photos below that show the renovation well.
